Most runners skip strength. Their legs pay for it.

If you're like most runners, you've spent far more time logging miles than building strength. You know you should lift — you just don't know how to fit it in with all the miles you feel like you need to do.

"I know I should strength train, but don't know how I can fit it in with all the miles I feel like I need to do."

The Durable Runner takes the guesswork out. Every workout is planned for you, so you can focus on what strength training does for your running:

Build strength & endurance. Reduce injury risk. Recover faster. Run longer.

How it works

1

Open the app

Your next workout is waiting. No planning, no spreadsheets, no guesswork.

2

Lift and log

Follow the exercise videos and log your weights. When the last round feels easy, add weight and watch your strength climb.

Go run

Two to three 40-minute sessions a week on easy-run or rest days, built around your running, not in place of it.

The program

Three four-week phases that build on each other. Start at Foundation, finish Durable, then repeat the cycle heavier. Miss a week for illness or travel and pick up right where you left off.

Phase 1 · Weeks 1–4

Foundation

Learn the movements, build control, and set the base everything else stands on.

Phase 2 · Weeks 5–8

Build

Add load and volume to build the strength that carries you through long runs.

Phase 3 · Weeks 9–12

Durable

Keep getting stronger so your body holds up through long runs, higher mileage, and race day.

Coaching in every workout

Each workout lists the time, equipment, and focus, with step-by-step instructions and form cues for the main lifts. Some exercises have a one-tap swap if your gym doesn't have the equipment.

No gym? No problem.

The main phases use a gym or well-equipped home gym. A separate bodyweight program is included for runners who train at home.

Fuel and recover

Simple guides for race-day fueling, hydration, sodium, sleep, and recovery, with the numbers runners actually need.

Real runners. Real results.

Less soreness, faster recovery, more miles

"The strength training has helped a lot. It's helped me not be as sore. It's helped me recover better, recover faster. I can do more longer endurance, more miles, stay on my feet longer."

Evan Jensen

I've been running for more than 25 years. That includes 200+ marathons, 12 hundred-mile finishes, a 200-mile finish, and the record for the most finishes at the Mountain Lakes 100.

I've coached runners to finish lines from the half marathon to the 50K. Strength training is a big part of how I've kept running this long, and The Durable Runner is the plan I wish I'd had at the start.

I've also dropped out of six 100-milers, mostly because of fueling mistakes. I learned those lessons the hard way, so you don't have to.
